Question:

Why doesn't Taiwan become just like Hong Kong or Macau (still part of China but with self-government)?
What's so bad about such an arrangement?
Couldn't Taiwan become a "Special Administrative Region", and thus military tensions across the Taiwan Strait would cease?

For the same reason that Canada, or Puerto Rico doesn't become an official state of the US.
The problem with Hong Kong and Macau's current status is that even though they have self governing abilities they are still under the control of the PRC and the still have to follow any rules that they set for them. On top of that their independence comes with a expiration date, for Hong Kong it is 50 years from the time it was give over to the PRC government by the British and the Portuguese had a similar deal but I don't remember the time frame for the full integration into PRC China.
As it stands now Taiwan is a completely independent sovereign nation that is in control of its own development with no limitations or foreign power dictating what it can do.
Other than that Taiwan ROC is a democratic nation and PRC China is a communist dictatorship.
Why would you give up governing control of your own country to another country?

I agree with Chubu. Well said.
Why give up anything you have just because somebody else claims that it belongs to them, especially when they have absolutely no proof which substantiates any such claim?

Taiwan does not wish to be "STILL PART OF CHINA", because is NOT nor ever has been a part of the country you refer to as "China".

Indeed, there is nothing bad about such an arrangement. It is an idea whose time has come. The people of Taiwan will continue to thrive and prosper (and let's not fool ourselves, the economy is more important to the 30+ million people on this small island than their political status is) as a SAR just like Hong Kong and Macao have been doing for over a decade now.
Yes, Taiwan could and very possibly will become a SAR in the next 10 years. Not only will it ease the military tensions, but very possibly it will end the incessant propaganda that those who give their support to the division of China in the Taiwan category continually spew. We wish them a bon voyage and a safe return to the United States of America.

China and Taiwan already have deeply intertwined economic and social ties. In many ways they already operate as one country, despite their separate and sometimes acrimonious political relationship. Back when both places were poor they used to fight. Now there is too much money at stake and regular people on both sides want a permanent peace, so cooperation is the outcome.

The trade between China and Taiwan is already booming and President Ma of Taiwan is working towards this very goal.
If things progress at this pace very soon Taiwan will be made a inseparable province of China, and when it happens we will enforce our Internet Censorship Laws over Taiwan as well to ward off any negativities. Facebook, YouTube, Twitter and several foreign based websites will be first to be axed. I hope Taiwanese getting mentally prepared for our unique and harmonious Internet experience.

Its because Taiwanese very well understand that the words of Communists doesn't count much. Even though China pledged to allow the administration of Hong Kong without any interference, they are already poking their nose and imposing their will over them.

yes,It's the true destination of taiwan. Premier Wenjiabao and president Hujingtao's statements in a lot of occasions that guarantee highly self-government. Wen said "we can talk anything with taiwan authority with anyone who accept one china principle regardless of what he have done in the past".(I translate from chinese version) .That shows the great sincerity of central government to solve taiwan issue peacefully.
here, I make a prediction about the political future about taiwan and mainland china, taiwan will integrate with mainland china in the form of federation, by which means fully self-government will be ensure.
To those guys who hostile to china and those guys who don't have basic knowledge about china, please stop to distort information.
To taiwanese,I treat you as my compatriot.
